About the role
This role forms part of the Council‑endorsed Safe City Liaison Program, a three‑year initiative designed to enhance community safety, engagement and public confidence within Hobart’s CBD.
Operating under an Educate–Engage–Refer model, the position focuses on early intervention, de‑escalation and referral rather than enforcement. The role provides a highly visible and approachable presence, supporting positive interactions with the community and local businesses while contributing to a safe and welcoming city environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a visible presence through regular patrols of the CBD, monitoring public spaces and deterring anti‑social behaviour through engagement and reporting.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with businesses, community members and partner agencies to identify and address safety and amenity concerns.
- Respond to incidents using a non‑confrontational, education‑focused approach, including de‑escalation and referral of vulnerable individuals to appropriate support services.
- Accurately record and report observations, incidents and compliance matters, working collaboratively with Council, Tasmania Police and relevant agencies to support coordinated outcomes.

Key Skills and Experience
- Experience working directly with the community, ideally in social services, health, emergency services or a similar environment.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build rapport and influence positive behaviour.
- Demonstrated conflict resolution and de‑escalation skills in complex or challenging situations.
- Ability to apply regulatory frameworks and support compliance through education and engagement.
- Proven ability to develop effective working relationships across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Ability to work independently, use initiative and contribute to team outcomes.
