About the role
This role is responsible for leading the Salamanca Market crew in the setup, delivery, and pack-down of Salamanca Market (or any interim market), ensuring all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with operational standards. Working under the general direction of the Salamanca Market Supervisor, the Relief Team Leader plays a key role in maintaining the smooth operation and high standards of one of Hobart’s most iconic community events.
Role accountabilities include
- Coordinate and assist crew members with the setup and pack-down of market infrastructure, including signage, stallholder structures, and site furniture.
- Lead the market crew and site operations in the absence of the Salamanca Market Supervisor, ensuring safe and effective delivery of the market.
- Guide cleansing services, volunteer coordinators, and stallholder coordinators to ensure smooth operations.
- Respond to stallholder requests and collect on-site payments.
- Complete incident and near-miss reports and communicate with the Market Supervisor.
- Act as Deputy Chief Warden and/or Chief Warden during emergencies, directing stallholders and the public as needed.
- Ensure all crew members are trained and familiar with operational procedures before undertaking tasks.
- Attend regular team leader meetings and provide feedback to improve market operations.
- Be prepared to work full-day shifts of up to 13.5 hours, including early morning starts on Saturdays.

About you

The below are the essentials for the role;
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in the Salamanca Market crew, including direct experience with the set-up and pack-down of Salamanca Market, road closures and traffic management.
- Understanding of workplace health and safety as applied to the market operations including City of Hobart responsibilities as a PCBU.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and lead teams, resolve conflicts, and communicate effectively.
- Sound understanding of workplace health and safety, particularly in market operations.
- Physically fit and capable of walking long distances, lifting, and bending.
- Available to work Saturdays from 5:00 am to 13-hour shifts.
- Holds the following mandatory licenses:
- White Card (Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry)
- Current Driver Licence
- Competency in operating market tractors and Polaris ATV
- Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (RWVP) – Employment
Desirable qualifications:
- Emergency Management qualifications
- Chief Warden training
- Traffic Management competencies (RIISS00060 or equivalent)
